REACH Center in Richland Holds Forum on GMO's

Posted: Updated:
RICHLAND, WA - The REACH in Richland held a forum Tuesday night about Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO's.

Doctor Amit Dhingra from the Department of Horticulture at WSU in Pullman talked about concerns from both an Ag producer and the public standpoint.

He says biotechnology can be used to generate drought resistant crops as well as fuel people's cars using biodiesel.

James Curry, the Director of State and Local Government Affairs of Monsanto Corporation presented benefits, and challenges facing farmers and public policy.

"I don't think it serves the publics interest in mandating something that needs to be labeled. With the potential to scare consumers when it's been determined to be equivalent," says Curry.

A recent measure in Oregon that would require labeling on GMO foods failed by just a few hundred votes, making it the fourth state in the west to reject the labeling requirement, following Colorado, California and Washington.
