YAKIMA,WA-- A recent survey shows journalists and police officers drink the most coffee out of any profession, and that same survey also shows a majority of Americans drink three or more cups a day. Soon you can enjoy your cup of joe with an officer in Yakima as the department kicks of a new program next week called Coffee With A Cop.

The department is starting this because the officers want to develop a positive relationship with people who live in Yakima.

Coffee With A Cop is a nationally recognized organization happening in more than 170 cities and towns across the country, and now the YPD is joining in to come together with the community in Yakima in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and of course drink coffee.

Mike Bastinelli from the Yakima Police Department said he wants people to show up and bring questions, comments and concerns for the officers to hear.

"This is an opportunity again to talk to the police officers in a non-threatening environment, there's no speeches, there's no agenda, we're just there to hopefully continue a dialogue between the police department and the public," Bastinelli said.

The first meeting in Yakima will be next Thursday at the McDonald's on South First Street and Nob Hill Boulevard.  It will go from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Organizers said one of the keys to Coffee With A Cop's success is that it removes the physical barriers and crisis situations that are usually the interactions between law enforcement and the community.

Bastinelli said there will be 10 to 12 officers ranging from detectives to patrol to traffic enforcement officers to talk to at the first Coffee With A Cop next week.
