New Visit Tri-Cities Brand Looks Very Similar to Brand of Major South American City

TRI-CITIES, WA. -- Last fall, the Tri-Cities re-branded itself with the help of a Seattle-based company. But we found out Thursday, the brand is eerily similar to the same branding done by another city in South America.


A viewer posted a link on our Facebook wall to a website called "Under Consideration". On that web page they were critiquing a proposed brand for Sao Paulo, Brazil and get this, it was posted over 3-years ago.


Now this past September, visit Tri-Cities, formerly known as the Visitors and Convention Bureau, adopted a new brand for our area. Comparing the two, they look nearly identical even down to the color scheme and font used.


We talked to the Tri-Cities brand designer Roger Brooks on the phone. He told us he had no idea about the brand for Sao Paulo, but he thinks something positive could come from the comparison. 


"There was no corroboration, or collaboration between them at all." Brooks said. "As a matter of fact, we didn't even know. My first reaction is I think it would be really awesome if the Tri-Cities and Sao Paulo had a sister city relationship now that there's some similarities."


Brooks also told me that since the Tri-Cities and Sao Paulo do not necessarily compete for tourists that he wouldn't see any copyright issues. And again, he said he did not copy any of his designs from the Sao Paulo designer. 


We contacted Visit Tri-Cities office and the man who designed the Sao Paulo design but neither of them got back to us today.
