#StaySafe Man Survives Massive Heart Attack He Doesn't Even Realize He's Having

YAKIMA, WA.- Something like a heart attack can strike at any time and without warning; for one Yakima man he had no idea he was even in danger, but some quick thinking and simple steps saved his life.

Jim Sprecher was working in his shop when what he described as an overwhelming feeling of doom washed over him; he stumbled through the door of his home told his wife to call 911. Minutes later he was unconscious and without a pulse.

But thanks to some quick thinking from his wife, she saved his life, all by using CPR.

It's been about two years since Jim experienced a massive heart attack, but for his wife, Hope, the experience still brings tears to her eyes.

Jim was unconscious for 4 days before he finally came to and he said he never thought something like this would happen to him.

There were no typical warning signs, like chest pain, or shortness of breath.

“I thought I was somewhat athletic at the time and my cholesterol was low and my blood pressure and all that and being a retired marine I try to stay fit but apparently that wasn't enough,” Jim told KNDO.

After that, Jim says he began exercising 5 days a week, running 3 miles a day, eating healthier, and gave up smoking; he's stronger now, and doing better than ever.

“It's not something you can prevent but you can prepare yourself to be stronger and survive the next one,” Jim said.

Both Jim and Hope believe everyone should learn CPR; adults and children can all benefit from learning the simple steps to save a life.

But for the couple that has been married for 36 years, they're just happy to have each other and know they took the steps to survive.
