YAKIMA, WA-- We could see an appeal from the Yakima City Council after a federal judge ordered a redrawing the electoral map for city council elections. Council members met in an executive session on Friday to discuss what their next step is.

However, in that meeting no decision was made in regards to if Yakima City Council will make an appeal to the ruling from a federal judge to redraw the electoral map.

Governor Jay Inslee said he supports the federal court ruling in the American Civil Liberties lawsuit against the City of Yakima and the idea of redrawing the electoral map for Yakima City Council elections.

The federal judge's ruling would require the City of Yakima to adopt a city council electoral system based on seven districts, which they do not have right now.

Yakima mayor Micah Cawley said there is a long road ahead before they can make a final decision to appeal or not.

"Today we were briefed by our legal council on the issues in the case and we're trying to make sure that we can reflect and think and come back together and hopefully make a decision at a public council meeting, have that discussion and vote," mayor Cawley said.

One of the major issues that will come with this ruling centers on the terms for council members.

Under the judge's order, all seven city council positions would be up for election this year, which would end the current member's terms two years earlier than scheduled.

Mayor Cawley also said a decision to appeal could come as soon as the next city council meeting, but council members want to speak to their legal advisor again before they make that decision.
