Police Make An Arrest In Fatal Shooting In Toppenish

TOPPENISH, WA.- We're learning more after a fatal shooting on Saturday afternoon in Toppenish.

Toppenish Police released the victim's name on Sunday morning; Ramon Verduzco was shot multiple times in an alley off South Alder Street in Toppenish Saturday afternoon just past one.

We learned Sunday morning police do have a 16-year-old male in custody as a suspect.

Children were playing outside just feet away from where Ramon Verduzco was shot and killed Saturday afternoon.

We spoke with one witness who didn't want to share his name, but told us he heard the shots and ran outside to find Verduzco lying on the ground.

“We just heard four gunshots and then by the time we looked outside the window there was a kid laying on the ground then we saw people on the phone calling 911.”

Toppenish Police say they're not releasing the suspect's name they have in custody because he is a minor.

Police did tell us both the victim and suspect were known to have gang ties.

The witness we spoke to who lived right in front of the murder scene told us he'd never thought of this as a bad area.

He said it's a family neighborhood, but the shooting left an unsettling feeling for him and his wife who have a young daughter who plays right outside in the front yard.

“There's kids running around here and there's a playground over here too so yeah that's pretty scary and kids could have been outside and witnessed that and been traumatized.”

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow at 10 AM. According to Toppenish Police the suspect has been turned over to the Yakima County Court, they will determine when he will appear for his preliminary appearance.
