Two Republicans Say Homeland Security Funding and Immigration Shoudn't be Linked

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Two prominent Republican senators are agreeing with the Obama administration, that a measure funding the Department of Homeland Security shouldn't be linked to a provision that would overturn the president's executive actions on immigration.

It's an issue that is holding up passage of the funding measure in the Senate, just five days before the department's funding runs out. Lindsey Graham, speaking on ABC, and John McCain, on CBS, told Sunday talk shows that they would oppose linking the two issues together.

Graham says the immigration dispute should be allowed to play out in the courts.

But a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) says it's time for Senate Democrats to "stop blocking legislation" funding the department.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson says the possible shutdown of the department would threaten the administration's efforts to counter the extremist appeal of the Islamic State group in the United States.

He also says communities struggling with winter snowstorms might also be affected.
