Academic All-Star: Zillah's Jacob Cleveringa

ZILLAH, WA - While the Zillah boys basketball team shoots for their second state title, junior Jacob Cleveringa is ready for his first.  "I just hope we keep winning. we just need to win four more games and hopefully we can," Cleveringa said.

He transferred to Zillah from Riverside Christian this year, and he's happy to say it's been a smooth transition.  "They've all played together forever.  It's actually gone really well though.  Everyone accepts each other and we're all friends," Cleveringa added.

Cleveringa is a three-sport athlete who plays football, basketball, and tennis.  With all that work, he still finds the time to keep a 3.9 GPA.  "It's just a school comes first kind of thing.  It's what my parents always said, so you just have to prioritize," Cleveringa said.

Head coach Doug Berge says Jacob has been a tremendous addition to the Leopards squad.  "Jacob is just a great kid and just does everything the right way and leads by example. And also he's just the type of kid you want on your team because he does all the little things and doesn't always get all the credit he deserves, so it's great to see him get some other recognition being great in the classroom, but also great on the basketball court," Berge said.

And the basketball courts have been good to him in his inaugural season at Zillah.  The Leopards have just one loss this year, something Cleveringa sees as an advantage.  "I think we know we're pretty good but it was nice to be humbled that we can be beat.  I think it was good for us in the long run that we lost, but I think we have a chance to win it all," Cleveringa said.
