PASCO, WA- Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant is responding to requests from Consejo Latino and other protesters that he step aside in the Antonio Zambrano homicide investigation .

Sant put emphasis Thursday afternoon on the fact that he was elected for his job, and that means he does not give up when situations get challenging.

In the letter Sant sent to the group Consejo Latino, he acknowledges their leader Felix Vargas' efforts in keeping everyone peaceful while still respecting their right to protest.

Sant said many have questions about his involvement in the Special Investigation Unit process, he wants to be clear that when he appears with the SIU spokesperson Sergeant Ken Lattin, it is purely for convenience purposes with the media and others who want updates.

"Well, that's not my job, to kick this responsibility aside because obviously we come across difficult cases all the time, and it's certainly easier to reach out and say, "Hey, would you go ahead and reach out and do that?" But prosecutors around the state are elected to individual counties to make the tough decisions, to stand by those decision," explained Sant.

As for updates on the investigation the prosecutor believes the SIU report could come back to him in the first few weeks of April. Sant said the Zambrano family has been updated on the status of the investigation.

As for a lack of information to the public, Sant explained that comes from the fact that a coroner's inquest will take place eventually, so any more information released could tamper with that process.

PASCO, WA - Franklin County Prosecutor responds to Consejo Latino Chairman Felix Vargas' letter asking him to step away from Zambrano case.

Consejo Latino sent their letter to Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant on Tuesday, March 3rd and Sant has released his response to Vargas.

PASCO, WA - A local group wants Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant to step away from the Antonio Zambrano case, the man who was killed by Pasco Police Officers three weeks ago.

Consejo Latino mailed the letter Tuesday to Prosecutor Sant's office.

They are demanding he make a request to state Attorney General Bob Ferguson  to appoint a special prosecutor to this case.

They say Prosecutor Sant has been working too closely with the special investigations unit, appearing in three press conferences with the SIU spokesperson Sergeant Ken Lattin.

Consejo Latino says his appearance in these briefings implies Sant is taking the side of police.

"We question his credibility, he has been part of the SIU investigation, Mr. Sant is also a former police officer and he is normally the defender of the police in cases involving criminal activity," Felix Vargas, Consejo Latino Chairman said.

Overall, the group thinks Sant has a strong conflict of interest in handling this case.

They are now waiting for a response.

They say if prosecutor Sant decides not to hand over the case, they will ask the Governor to intervene.
