YAKIMA, WA. -- Governor Jay Inslee stopped in Yakima Wednesday to talk about early childhood education.

After a tour of a licensed family day care on North 6th Stree, Governor Jay Inslee said that families in Yakima are doing a great job getting their kids in school early and that local leaders have the right attitude in promoting early childhood learning.

Governor Inslee started off his visit by touring a family run day care that handles mostly Hispanic children. It was very entertaining to watch the Governor try to interact with the kids in Spanish. But it was a fun time for everyone.

Afterward, the Governor got down to more serious business at a roundtable discussion with local leaders. We caught up with the Governor after the meeting.

"Well this success in Yakima is so impressive on so many levels,"  Washington Governor Jay Inslee said. "From a law enforcement perspective, we heard from law enforcement that this is one of the best gang prevention investments you can make to give kids confidence to keep them out of gangs."

At the roundtable, local Yakima leaders promised to keep promoting early learning to help kids succeed at school later in life. This visit was part of a tour to promote the Governor's proposed budget which would include the largest-ever state investment in childhood learning.

The legislature will vote on the final budget at the end of the spring session.
