Motorist killed, 5 students hurt in Washington bus crash

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: ORONDO, Wash. (AP) - Investigators say it appears the driver of a large box truck fell asleep before the truck crossed the center line of a rural central Washington highway, colliding with a car and a school bus.

The crash Thursday morning killed the car's driver and sent dozens of students to a hospital for evaluation.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Darren Wright says the truck driver was cited in a collision that caused an injury in the same area just over a year ago. The trooper says the truck driver crossed the center line in that crash as well.

Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee confirms that the female bus driver, the truck driver and a truck passenger are in satisfactory condition. A 12-year-old girl passenger in the car was treated and released.

Authorities say 43 students taken to the hospital after the bus crashed have been sent home after evaluation.

The State Patrol says the 22-year-old woman driving the car died at the crash scene.

PREVIOUS: ORONDO, Wash. (AP) - A motorist has been killed and five students and others were injured in a crash in central Washington involving a school bus, truck and car.

The Washington State Patrol said Thursday that two people in the box truck were seriously hurt. Injuries to students and driver of the Orondo School District bus were minor.

The injured people were taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, about 20 miles south of the accident scene.

Trooper Darren Wright tweeted that a total of 43 students were transported to the hospital to be checked.

Wright says the crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. on Highway 97 about five miles north of Orondo.

There is one school in the town, a combination elementary-middle school with about 160 students.

Wright says the highway will be closed for several hours.
