Ore. Senate passes bill making voter registration automatic

Posted: Updated:
SALEM, OR. (AP) - The Oregon Senate has voted to send Gov. Kate Brown a bill automatically registering voters by using state driver's license records.

Lawmakers approved the measure 17-13 Thursday, largely along party lines. One Democrat voted against it.

The bill was Brown's idea as secretary of state. She said she'll sign it.

She has estimated that 300,000 new voters will be registered. State experts estimated it will cost around $800,000 to comply.

The bill is among several that Democrats have pushed through at the beginning of the current legislative session, using expanded House and Senate majorities from last year's election.

Republicans argued the proposal could expose Oregonians to data breaches and jeopardize personal information.
