Yakima Sundome Holds Annual State Basketball Tournament

YAKIMA, WA.- The State 1A and 2A basketball tournaments got underway Thursday at the Sundome.

It's a spring tradition that's drawn tourists to the Yakima Valley for years.

The Yakima Sundome has been hosting the state basketball tournament for over fifteen years now and the tournament has continued to grow each year bringing more and more tourism and money to the Yakima Valley.

Rich Austin with the Yakima Valley Sports Commission told us they're expecting thousands to attend the event this weekend.

They coordinate with hotels and restaurants each year to support all of the out of town travelers.

“The vast majority of the teams, over 75 percent, are from out of town so we got folks coming in from all across the state spending anywhere from 2 to 3 even 4 nights in hotels,” Austin said.

Austin says the tournament brings in around three to four million dollars each year; it's one of the biggest financial weekends for community businesses.

The tournament lasts until Saturday evening.
