FINLEY, WA- Fire crews in Finely spent Saturday afternoon working to put out a large grass fire near Game Farm Road and 9 Canyon Road.

Firefighters said the fire started while an owner burned a large pile.  <mosID>KNDU.DEKO.MOS</mosID><ncsID>KNDU.DEKO.MOS</ncsID><mosItemEditorProgID>DekoMOS.Browser</mosItemEditorProgID><mosAbstract>The fire jumped and crossed over into a neighbor's property burning up fences and wooden poles.

The fire spread to almost 10-15 acres on the property.  No one was injured and none of the surrounding homes were damaged, but firefighters said this is a good time to remind people to be careful when doing controlled burns to make sure they do not get out of hand like this one.

"The weather is getting nice.  You have to stay around your controlled burns.  You have to have a small footprint.  Don't do a 50x50 pile.  We still like 4 foot by 4 foot piles, natural vegetation.  Keep with it, with a shovel and some water if you can because obviously it can get out of hand really quick," said Cpt. Devin Helland, Benton County Fire District 1.

Firefighters called this type of fire a natural cover fire.  Since power poles were involved, PUD may have to come out to inspect the area.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to any nearby houses.
