American Red Cross in Need of Blood Donations

Posted: Updated:
RICHLAND, WA - Snow, freezing rain and arctic cold weather along the east coast has canceled nearly 1,000 blood drives since February, and now the American Red Cross says they are in desperate need of donations.

The facility in Richland is one of three in the Pacific Northwest that takes platelet donations which they also are in need of.

For the last three days, students and volunteers at Columbia Basin College in Pasco have held a blood drive to help out.

"I look at it as what if one day one of my family members needs blood for me will I be able to give that to them. I was the first time donor yesterday and I was really nervous I did not know what to expect. My advice to other people would be don't be nervous just go in there smiling and you'll be fine," says Karen Magana, volunteer for Red Cross.

If you would like to make an appointment with the Red Cross to make a donation, call 1-800-733-2767.

Volunteers say just one blood donation can save up to three lives.
