RICHLAND, WA- An 83-year-old woman is in the hospital after threatening to hurt herself and others with knives.

Richland, Pasco, Kennewick police and deputies from Benton County were called to the Emeritus retirement home in Richland around 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Officers tried to talk the woman out of the threats and spent three hours with her. They say she was having a mental crisis.

"We were able to get a negotiator on scene, we also had a response from the Crisis Response Unit, and so we had a mental health professional on scene as well as medical staff from the facility. So, after several hours of discussion, she was able to put down the knives," explained Captain Mike Cobb with the Richland Police Department.

Captain Cobb said this situation had the best possible outcome, with help from those mental health professionals.

Cobb said everyone's patience also played a factor in helping the woman who was eventually too exhausted to continue with her threats.
