Attorney General Will Get Involved In Pasco Shooting Investigation At Request Of The Governor

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA- Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson was in town on Tuesday.

He attended the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting and addressed various topics involving our area.

The attorney general said he asks for daily briefings on the Pasco officer-involved shooting that killed Antonio Zambrano. Right now, his office is on stand by during the shooting investigation. Ferguson said the only way he will get involved is if Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant or Governor Jay Inslee requests it.

"The A.G.'s office does not have what we call, "original jurisdiction". The only way we have authority to bring a criminal matter, is if it's from the prosecuting attorney. If he asks us to take a case, or if the governor asks. Those are the two ways in which we have criminal authority," explained Ferguson.

Right before NBC Right Now spoke with Bob Ferguson, Consejo Latino Chairman Felix Vargas handed one of Ferguson's staff members a hard copy of the letter he sent to Governor Inslee, requesting the State Attorney General's involvement.

As of now, Prosecutor Shawn Sant has rejected a request to step aside, and no response has come from the governor's office on his decision just yet.

_______________________________________________________________________ The local group Consejo Latino has now sent a letter to Governor Jay Inslee asking for an independent special prosecutor investigate the officer involved shooting last month in Pasco.

The group previously sent a letter to Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant urging him to request that Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson appoint an independent special prosecutor to replace Sant on this case.  Sant rejected the request.
Consejo Latino claims Sant is working too closely with the special investigative unit in charge of handling the case.
