Yakima and Union Gap Make Plans to Build Multi-Million Dollar Soccer Complexes

YAKIMA, WA.- The City of Yakima has seen a need for more soccer facilities in the city for years, but now they're doing something about it.

The City of Yakima and the non-profit group Sozo Sports has been discussing plans for the complex that would be built along Spring Creek Road near 36th Avenue; it would include 16 different outdoor fields and possibly 2 indoor fields as well.

But this pricy new sports complex isn't the only one in the works, the City of Union Gap is currently working with another non profit group to try to build their own soccer complex, about 5 miles from this one.

We spoke with Community Relations Manager Randy Beehler about the two projects, “Where the City of Yakima is at in its project and cooperative agreement with Sozo is likely further along than Union Gap is in its potential soccer complex. We've been working with the folks from Sozo for quite a while now,” Beehler explained.

The City of Yakima says plans for the soccer complex are moving along quickly, and Beheeler believes within the next month a formal agreement will be drafted and presented to the city council.

The city estimates the new complex will cost somewhere around 10 million dollars; they're hoping to begin construction sometime this fall and have kids on the field by spring.
