Woman Recovering In Seattle After Fire Causes 2nd and 3rd Degree Burns

YAKIMA, WA.- A Yakima woman is recovering from severe burns after a fire early Tuesday morning, at The Grand Hotel on East Yakima Avenue.

Yakima fire crews are still investigating the blaze that sent an elderly woman to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with second and third degree burns.

Crews arrived on the scene around 4 AM and found smoke pouring out of several windows on the 5th floor.

Firefighters found the elderly woman inside the apartment where they believe the fire started. The woman was found in her bathroom with second and third degree burns to her legs and all of her fingertips.

Captain Tom Schneider explained the fire could have been much worse, but thankfully, the automatic sprinkler system at the hotel was working properly.

“This could have been a lot worse, the automatic sprinkler system did its job and kept the fire in check, in fact most of the fire was out by the time the fire fighters got there,” Schneider said.

39 firefighters were called to help put out the fire; they estimate the fire caused about ten thousand dollars worth of damage.

They are still investigating, but firefighters do believe the fire was caused from someone smoking cigarettes inside the building.
