Kennewick's O'Malley Looks for M's Roster Spot

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, Wash - This winter, Shawn O'Malley had to move forward.

The Kennewick native started his career at Southridge High School in 2006. After being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays, his minor league journey took him from the east coast, to Alabama, to Utah, and finally to Los Angeles where he broke into the majors with the Angels last year.

But just as he'd made it, the Angles cut him

Right before Christmas.

It was kind of unexpected, I was caught off guard,” says O'Malley. But I didn't have time to sit around and mope about it. It was right before Christmas so baseball is coming up pretty soon, believe it or not.>

But then he received a Christmas present.

I was sitting at home with my wife watching Wheel of Fortune, and the next thing you know I get a phone call and it's Tom Allison with the Mariners.”

So now he finds himself in Peoria, Arizona, auditioning for the team he grew up idolizing in Kennewick: his Seattle Mariners.

I remember my Dad would get tickets from his company, and once a year we'd go. I remember sitting up in those box suites about 1,000 miles away from the field, the players look like ants, but sitting there, I was like 'I can do that! I can play!'”

And with his community behind him, that's exactly what he'll try to do.

I want to thank everybody back home, they're excited, hopefully I can make everybody proud. I love [you] all and I'm so thankful for the support.”
