WAPATO, WA.- A fire Thursday night west of Wapato destroyed two farm shops and caused nearly $250,000 worth of damage.

According to firefighters both buildings on the 2000 Block of Riggs Road were already on fire when they arrived and around 100 bins of cut wood caught fire shortly after.

Several live power lines blocked access to parts of the fire and caused several small explosions inside the shops.

Crews believe the fire started because of a malfunctioning incinerator inside the shop.

Deputy Chief Kevin Frazier told us it's extremely important for homeowners to take precautions with equipment now that the weather is becoming warmer.

“People just have to take the precautions and watch the weather if they're going to be doing any ag burnings or natural vegetation fires. Just make sure things are out and don't leave them unattended,” Frazier explained.

19 firefighters responded to the shop fires. No one was injured, however both shops were completely destroyed.

Firefighters estimate that the fire caused around $240,000 in damage.
