UPDATE: 18 Year Old Man Arrested in Wapato After Stealing Car & Threatening Members of the Owners Family

WAPATO, WA - What would you do if you saw your own stolen car driving down the road? it actually happened in Wapato, where someone saw their family's stolen vehicle and took off after it.

Yakima Sheriff's Deputies arrested an 18-year-old man Monday afternoon after a stolen car chase led them here to the fenced off warehouse at Valicoff Fruit in Wapato.

Around two deputies received a call that someone had seen their relative's stolen car and they were pursuing the suspect.

According to deputies, the reporting party tried to block the car and that's when 18-year-old Brent Thompson-Sampson left the car and made threatening gestures with a sawed off shotgun.

No shots were fired and no one was injured. Deputies found Sampson a short time later at the Valicoff Fruit warehouse.

Detective Mike Russell told us they don't encourage citizens to take matters into their own hands, because it could've ended much worse. 

“This can be such a dangerous situation it's dangerous enough when you have a law enforcement officer with licensed sirens activated pursing someone, but when you have a couple of cars without lights and sirens it can be incredibly dangerous, even deadly,” Detective Russell explained.

An employee at Valicoff, who didn't want to be on camera, saw all of it happen and he did tell us Valicoff Fruit was on lock down during the incident.

Yakima Deputies, Wapato Police, and Washington State Patrol all responded to the incident.

Sampson is currently being held at the Yakima County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm.

WAPATO, WA.- Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested an 18-year-old man after he stole a car and threatened members of the owner's family after they followed him.Deputies were called out around 1:45 p.m. Monday to Valicoff Fruit in Wapato where deputies say the 18-year-old had ditched the stolen car and was running from the car owners family members, threatening them with a sawed-off shotgun. 

Deputies found the man in a fenced warehouse lot, along with the shotgun and discarded shells but say no shots were fired. 

The man has been booked into the Yakima County Jail.
