COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Fans looking forward to seeing the hydroplanes back on Lake Coeur d'Alene will have to wait another year. Organizers of the 2015 Silver Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Race say they're postponing the event until 2016.

Keith Allen, the Vice President and Race Director, says the main reason for canceling this year's race is due to the time crunch they're facing "in gaining sponsorship funds to pay for the event."

"We began the permitting process in late December 2014 and by mid-January 2015 had contacted all the required permitting agencies," Allen says. "Many of those permits have already been approved and issued."

"Nonetheless, it has been challenging to work with many agencies given their experiences from the past events and working through those issues, which has occurred successfully, has taken more time than originally planned and the only right thing to do to ensure a successful event in 2016 and beyond was to take our time and do this right."

Allen says they could not begin trying to gain an estimated $300,000 in sponsorships to hold the race until that permit process was complete. He says they got the final OK on the permits 75 days before the proposed dates for the 2015 race, which was scheduled to happen July 17, 18, and 19.

Coeur d'Alene Silver Cup, Inc., which Allen is a part of, says it's talked with each permitting agency and has started the process of changing the permit applications for the event in 2016.

Allen says he believes that should happen in the next 30-60 days, and then they can begin talking to potential sponsors for 2016 "with all of the necessary assurances and guarantees they would expect of us."

The 2016 race does have tentative dates in the same timeframe as this year's race, mid-July, but they're awaiting H1 Unlimited to confirm those dates.

"We have been talking to the organizers in Coeur d'Alene and we all agree the postponement of the race is in the best interest of this site and our sport," said Steve David, Chairman of H1 Unlimited. "Now we can work together to get everything in order and return the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes to Coeur d'Alene in 2016."

The last hydroplane race on Lake Coeur d'Alene was the Diamond Cup back in 2013. (Pictures from that event in the slideshow below)
