Several Accidents on I-82 in Yakima County Caused by Wrong Way Drivers

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - Two serious head on collisions on I-82 in the lower Yakima Valley have happened in just the last week... And both times, there was a wrong-way driver.

I-82 has seen its fair share of accidents, especially this weekend, but the issue of drivers entering the wrong lane of the interstate has been an especially common occurrence over the past week.

Two accidents like this have been reported since last Monday, one about 4 miles west of Sunnyside had a fatality and the other near Granger involved the driver being under the influence. State patrol tells me of two other reports of drivers going into oncoming traffic but drivers in both of those situations corrected before causing any accidents.

"One of the important things to remember is that if you are on the highway, state law says to keep right unless you are passing. Well most wrong way vehicles are going to be on that inside lane coming you. If you're over in the right lane, it gives you more time to avoid that." said State Patrol Lieutenant Kiley Conaway

Multiple factors can play a part in driving in oncoming traffic. Anything from age disorientation, effects of drugs and alcohol and unfamiliarity to the area are some to name a few.

If you see anyone driving on the opposite side of the road, call 911 immediately.
