WAKE UP YOUR HEALTH: Food Safety Reminders and Recommendations

Posted: Updated:

WAKE UP YOUR HEALTH: Food Safety is not something we think about often. But as the holidays approach and we start cooking more food for more people, it is something we should keep in mind.

Susan Shelton, Food Safety Program Supervisor at the Benton Franklin Health District says one of the most common mistakes people make is washing their raw meats.

She says that can spread germs around your sink and kitchen counter. The recommended approach is simply cooking to the right temperature. She suggests every kitchen have a food thermometer.

Another common mistake is not hand washing often enough. She says of course wash your hands before your start cooking but remember to wash again after handling raw meats.

Shelton advises people take a look at the Benton Franklin Health District's website for more helpful recommendations on food safety. They also offer classes to people wanting to learn more about keeping their families safe.
