City of Kennewick Offering 20k in Grants to Support Downtown Restaurants

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA. -- The City of Kennewick continues to revitalize the downtown area to bring in more businesses and try to make it a central point in the community.

They're excited to announce they're giving out $20,000 in grants next month to help downtown restaurants.

Up to 4 local people will be getting up to $5,000 each to help existing restaurants succeed or help start up a new restaurant like one that could go into this vacant property on West 1st Avenue and South Auburn Street.

We talked to the woman who is renting this building out, she says she's excited to help grow downtown Kennewick.

A long time ago, Josefina Wannarachue rented out this space in downtown Kennewick to a breakfast place, called Sun Stone. It's sat like this, empty, for some time now.

But through the America's Best Communities Contest, the City of Kennewick is now giving out $20,000 in grants to help bring local restaurants to the downtown area.

Josefina says she's very excited for the opportunity to get the grant. If she wins, she plans to put in brand new cooking equipment and make the building look great.

"That is the greatest thing that ever happened to downtown Kennewick!" Wannarachue said. "Thanks to the City of Kennewick. so that people, even especially the start up business, that will be a big help for them. It's really hard to start a business, especially in the restaurant business."

Josefina thinks the spot would be perfect for a upscale bakery to help the continued revitalization of downtown Kennewick.

Applications for the grant are due by the end of the month. Winners will be announced in November.
