Police Investigating Pedestrian Hit and Killed by Car

Posted: Updated:

HERMISTON, OR - Hermiston Police say a pedestrian died early Friday morning after being hit by a car.

Police say Leonardo L. Leal, 80, of Hermiston died at the scene around 6:38 a.m. on the 400 block of SW 11th St. (highway 207).

The initial investigation points to Leal being struck by a vehicle owned by Hermiston Sanitary Disposal and operated by a 32-year-old  employee while trying to cross Highway 207 westbound mid- block, according to release.

Officers believe speed was not a contributing factor nor were there any signs of any type of intoxicating influence/substances immediately known.

The driver and the company have been very forthcoming, cooperative and was the man who called 911 to report the crash, according to Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston.

The Oregon Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control and the road was reopened around 10:40 a.m.
