Yakima Valley Libraries & Yakima Valley Museum Promote Literacy Through "Yakima Reads"

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Libraries and the Yakima Valley Museum have joined forces to get more people reading through the "Yakima Valley Reads" program.

Modeled after the National Endowment of the Arts "Big Read" program, once the library decides on a book, over 500 copies are given out to the community at no charge. Books are made available in both English and Spanish. The book this season is The Martian by Andy Weir.

After the distribution of books, there's a series of movie nights hosted by the Yakima Valley Museum as well as speakers throughout the area.

"Space and science fiction aren't necessarily everybody's peak interest. It's not what you would go out and seek but the book and the movies and the speakers all tied together really give a new perspective," said Charlotte Layman, Community Library Resources Manager.

The Yakima Valley Museum will be showing a free screening of Robinson Crusoe on Mars today at 7 p.m and on Thursday, the West Valley Community Library will host a speaker from the Goldendale Observatory from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The topic is exploring Mars.
