Kennewick City Council Votes to Ban Outdoor Medical Marijuana Grows Considered a Nuisance

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - The Kennewick City Council Tuesday night voted to pass new legislation that will ban any outdoor medical marijuana grows that are considered to be a public nuisance.

The ban passed with a vote of four to one, Councilman John Trumbo was the only one that voted against it.

Under the new legislation, people can still grow outside as long as it's not considered a nuisance, but council members are advising people to grow inside anyway, to deter crime and theft.

"So the legislation that was passed, this past year, allowed us to basically address this issue of in a residential neighborhood. If you can see or smell an outdoor medical marijuana grow then it is in violation of the legislation," says Lisa Beaton, Kennewick City Attorney.

The new legislation goes into effect in 5 days.

City council members also said anyone who has already started an outdoor grow will be allowed to finish it and harvest the plants.

Recreational marijuana growing in Washington State is not legal.
