Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic Answers Questions for Flu Shot First-Timers

Posted: Updated:

WAKE UP NORTHWEST - Flu season is in full swing so we decided to pay Dr. Anderson with the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic in Toppenish a visit, to learn how he helps prepare people getting the flu shot for the first time.

Dr. Anderson tells us  he takes the time to explain what the flu shot benefits and risks involve. He says the most common reaction is a little soreness and occasionally a low grade temperature. He also adds that it's important to educate first-timers on what the flu shot really is.

"We try to explain to people that we're not actually giving them the live flu. It's attenuated form, meaning a less potent form of the virus that enables their immune system to get ready to fight the flu," said Dr. Anderson.

He also wants to emphasize if you get the flu shot at a location that's not the clinic you regularly visit, make sure your primary care provider gets a copy of the information for your medical records.
