Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels Starts Constructing New Kitchen

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE- Thursday, March 3, the Meals on Wheels construction made a lot of progress, the framing of the walls were going up. This is the second of the three buildings and the first building which will be the office building is in its final stages of  the construction.

At this time, they tell us they're still trying to fund the $400,000 kitchen appliances. To help donate to the equipment that will fill the kitchen for the program click here

To see their dreams that have been in the making for seven years finally start coming together, Marcee Woffinden says it becomes really emotional, "I came over earlier this morning and they've been giving a little bit of hard time, I teared up a little bit it's been a lot of blood sweat and tears and to have it come together, and to walk on that slab and see the walls going up it was emotional".

RICHLAND, WA- Wednesday evening was the official groundbreaking for Senior Life Resources Fowler Street Campus. The site is located at 1824 Fowler Street and is over two acres. There are set to have three 6,100 square foot buildings. Two of the three buildings are starting construction now and should be completed by next June.

We found out that one of those buildings will be used by the Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels Nutrition Program, it will be their central kitchen and cafe. The directors were extremely excited about the construction as they have waited decades for this day. Marcee Woffinden is one of the directors and told us it has been long awaited, "we started out 41 years ago with a budget of 12 for 12 meals a day, today I'm serving over 500 meals, so we were able to start smaller and grow with the program we've never had our own kitchen so we have borrowed, rented, begged".

Woffinden showed us the architectural layouts of the kitchen and other buildings. She said there is still a lot left to be done like filling the kitchen with appliances and is asking for the community to help. For information on how you can donate click here or call, 509-735-1911.
