End of Season Empties Canal of Water But Leaves Behind Fish

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA- At the end of every season, fish called carp are left in the canal. We received messages from some viewers worried about the canal located near Alder and 7th in Kennewick.

When we to take a look at the canal, there were hundreds of them left over. A neighbor nearby the canal says this isn't the first time he noticed the abundance of fish left. He told us each year there is a Russian family who stops by and collects the carp from the canal.

The Columbia Irrigation District told us it's a matter of getting through the screens at the dam that are not controlled by the irrigation district. Monday when we were at the canal the water was all completely dried up.

The irrigation district says in this situation it's best to just let nature take it s course. While they do deal with this same situation yearly, there are no other ways to try and avoid it because no matter what, the carp end up in the canals at the end of the season.
