RICHLAND, WA - With Halloween just days away you might be making your plans with the kids for the big night but before you do you should make sure safety is at the top of that list.

Richland Police say that making sure kids are visible in their costumes can be a problem as well as making sure they aren't running through the streets. They also want drivers to be more aware of kids running around with the increase in pedestrian traffic.

Another topic they mentioned was the danger of sex offenders, with all the strangers kids meet on Halloween this puts them on the radar. They say best way to keep the kids safe when you're out is to make sure they're always near you or in your line of sight. When you're out on the streets, you want to be on the look out for anything out of the ordinary and you don't want to let your children go inside a house or garage where you can't clearly see them.
"A lot of times sex offenders will prey on children when they're out of view of an adult, so not letting kids go into a home, not letting kids out of your site (and) just maintaining good supervision is the best way to maintain their safety," says Captain Mike Cobb, Richland Police.

Police also say that if your kids are old enough to go on their own remind them to be aware of their surroundings and don't be afraid to call police if they are feeling threatened.
