City of Yakima Says Parking Changes Seem To Be Making A Positive Difference

YAKIMA, WA.- Parking in downtown Yakima has been an issue for years, it's become too crowded for people who work there and others just visiting, but the city looked to improve that with new parking restrictions.

The parking that changed several lots from 4 hour parking to 2 hour parking has been in effect now since October 1st. We spoke with the city Tuesday about just how smoothly the transition has gone. They told us so far our local law enforcement is still being understanding, they're giving out more warnings than tickets.

They say employees in the downtown area are now using the designated parking spots, that were barely used before the parking time changes.

"Our enforcement officers have noticed better turnover of the spots in the 2 hour locations, so that means better opportunities for parking for the public when they come down for lunch or a meeting, so right now we're seeing good things in terms of turnover for the spaces," Yakima Economic Development Manager, Sean Hawkins explained.

In the next week or so the city says they'll start giving out tickets instead of warnings. If you need any reminders on where the all day parking can be found or the temporary two hour parking you can follow this link,
