What You Need To Know To Prepare Your Car For Winter

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA.- Fall feels like it just got here, but soon enough winter will be here, and for many that means digging out the tire chains and preparing your car for winter.

We stopped in at Westside Car Care in Yakima Wednesday afternoon to see just what needs to be done to "winter proof" your car.

A lot of your preparation will be little things, but they say they're important, you'll want to swap out your windshield wiper fluid for cold weather fluid, as well as have your car battery tested. They say if they're older than five years they can malfunction due to the cold.

You'll also want to check the tread on your tires, if it's worn it will make it difficult to drive on snow or ice, but they say the main thing to have in your car this winter are tire chains.

"A lot of people have tire chains in their cars, but they've never actually opened the box, or put them on, or had someone show them how to put them on the car," Westside Car Care Manager, Brad Witters told us.

They told us putting tire chains on your car is a simple five minute process, you lay the chains in front of the tire, drive the wheel to the center of the chain, wrap the chain around the tire, and then link and tighten the chains.

If cars aren't your thing though, Westside Car Care told us most autobody shops are more than willing to do a quick demonstration for people looking to put chains on their cars.
