Employees Evacuated After a Fire at a Fruit Processing Company In Selah

Posted: Updated:

SELAH, WA.- It's back to business as usual for employees at The Tree Top Fruit Processing Company in Selah after a small fire caused evacuations Thursday morning.

Right now firefighters believe a fruit drying unit malfunctioned and started a fire in the Ross building that holds the companies fruit drying equipment.

At first they weren't sure what caused the fire and Tree Top told us they needed to take every precaution, they evacuated around 100 employees while fire crews put the fire out.

"It's a dryer facility, we dehydrate apples and pears, so it does have a lot of heat in there and we are very cautious about what we do in there. The staff was well prepared and they handled it really well," Communications Director Sharon Miracle told us.

Tree top says they've had small fires before and several ammonia leaks over the years, so all their employees are trained on what to do in these situations.

There were no reported injuries, and firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly. They are currently looking into how much damage the fire caused.
