CBC Awards Over One Million Dollars in Scholarships This Year

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, WA- Friday the Columbia Basin College Foundation gave away over one million dollars in scholarships. When the foundation first began awarding students 30 years ago, they only gave away five awards worth $5,000 each.

This year they gave away a record number of scholarships, 568. The students who were there, were surrounded by family members and scholarship donors. We talked to the foundation CEO, Eric Clements, and he told us Friday is, "just a day of celebration and we're just so proud of our students for their hard work and also our donors and corporate sponsors that make this happen on a yearly basis".

87 percent of the applicants were awarded a scholarship and the recipients were chosen on a basis of their need, their major, the obstacles they have had to overcome to get their education and academic achievement.

The ceremony was held at the Red Lion in Pasco and the ballroom was completely filled with over 800 people. It was a room full of people appreciating education being valued so highly by students and the donors.
