Fiesta For The Future Event in Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash. -

YAKIMA, WA - Fiesta for the future is going on tonight at the Southeast Community Center in Yakima. The event is open to anyone wanting to grab a few refreshments and maybe even catch up with a few of this years city council candidates.

In an historic year for city council elections in Yakima, five of the fourteen candidates running are Hispanic. Having a Hispanic elected will be a first.

Candidates will also be raising awareness for people in the Hispanic community of Yakima to vote. The push to have a Hispanic representative in the city council has never been stronger.

''Right now, most people have turned in their ballots. If people haven't turned in their ballots, this is another opportunity to go out there and meet the candidates" says David Morales of the commission on Hispanic affairs.

A Q&A with the candidates will be held and information for new voters and non English speakers will also be available.

"You're gonna see more equity in the distribution and allocation of the services the city can provide... And also more dialogue and more community input." Says district 2 city council candidate Avina Gutierrez.

Fiesta for the future of Yakima goes until 8pm at the Southeast Community Center on 1211 South 7th Street in Yakima.
