WALLA WALLA, WA- Tasers are often associated as a less-lethal use of force, but so are bean bags. Walla Walla police used a few rounds to stop a suspect Thursday night.

Officers got a call about a man making threats around 10 p.m. on Willow Street. When they arrived they found out the suspect would not cooperate. Police then used a tactic Officer Tim Bennett says has been around for a decade.

32-year-old Ruben Wentz, familiar to police, and according to them familiar to criminal activity. "In our area, both the PD and the Sheriff's Department have had numerous contacts with Mr. Wentz. Several arrests for both criminal activity and warrants from previous criminal activity. He is well known to many law enforcement officers in this area," said Bennett.

On Thursday, officers responding to the call took caution because they believed he could have had a gun. At first they had no success at getting him outside, leading them to call in crisis negotiators. "Last night was just pertaining to threats and there were concerns because there were children inside the house. We want to make sure that everybody was okay," explained Bennett.

Those children are Wentz's girlfriends, and when we showed up, Jamie Jensen told us she remembers a different story than the uncooperative one police recalled. "He was in the backyard, they requested that he came outside of the fence. He did so, again, with his hands in the air. He immediately started crouching down towards the ground because they were asking him to lay down," claimed Jensen.

Officers demanded Wentz put his hands in the air and allow them to cuff him. Officer Bennett read us some of the police report which details how he did not do just that. Instead, police shot him with two rounds of the less-lethal bean bags before taking him in on one count of second degree assault.
