KENNEWICK, WA- Firefighters locally and across the nation used Daylight Saving Time to remind people to check and change their smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries.

Every six months, or at every Daylight Saving Time, it is recommended to change batteries to make sure the detectors work in the case they are ever needed.

"When it comes to life safety we always encouraged everyone to take every opportunity to protect themselves.  This is an easy way to remind yourself by keeping a routine every year and changing your smoke detectors biannually, every time you change your clock back or every time you change your clock's batteries," said Garrett Todd, with the Kennewick Fire Department.

Statistics from the International Association of Firefighters show more than 3,000 people die each year in the U.S. and Canada in structure fires and that having better smoke detectors can reduce that number.
