Union Gospel Mission Coming Up Short to Fill Thanksgiving Boxes for Needy Families in Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - The Union Gospel Mission (UGM) in Yakima has set out to feed 600 people on Thanksgiving, as well as fill up 500 boxes with everything needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal as part of their ThanksGive-Away. But they need your help to make that happen.

"How would you feel if you came home for dinner one night and there was no dinner?" Debie Caryl poses that question as she shows us around the food bank. Right now, they're coming up short when it comes to some key items for their food boxes.

Some of the items they need include turkeys, pies (homemade or store-bought), cool whip and stuffing. The mission tells me the need for this give-away is big.

"A lot of them are single-parent families and you would be surprised there's a lot of single dads with children. People are really excited. the children will know they get a nice thanksgiving dinner at their home," said Caryl.

Families with children under the age of 18 can sign up for a box on November 10th, 12th, 17th and the 19th. boxes will be given away November 24th.

Along with food and/or cash donations, UGM is also asking for plastic silverware and napkins. UGM is located at 1300 N. 1st St. in Yakima. Donations must be made by November 13th and they are tax deductible.
