Safeway in Richland Kicks Off Food Drive

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, WA- The Safeway in Richland kicked off their food drive to help local food banks. They have prepackaged grocery bags available to purchase for ten dollars.

When a shopper arrives at the checkout line they have the opportunity to purchase a grocery bag full of food and it will then be donated. Each bag includes the same ten items, peanut butter, a can of green beans, a can of corn, a can of tuna fish, spaghetti sauce, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, chicken noodle soup, tomato soup and canned peaches.

Unlike past years, Safeway is now going to scan and keep track of how many bags they sell a week and package cases of food items together before donating it to the food bank. In previous years, Safeway would just donate the bags of food and that would be labor intensive for the volunteers at the food bank. By casing the food together in large groups it will be faster and more efficient for both.

As of Tuesday morning, Safeway in Richland had sold 40 bags of food.
