PASCO, WA -- A resident of Pasco received a phone call from a person demanding that an IRS tax bill be paid. The caller claimed they would be arrested if they failed to make the payment. The number displayed on their caller ID was one from the Kennewick Police Department business line.

The caller also identified themselves using the name of an actual Kennewick Police Employee.

The Kennewick Police Department phone number was "spoofed", making it appear the call came from the business line when in fact it did not. Phone number spoofing is a fairly easy practice and frequently used in a phone scam to make it more believable.

The IRS does not make phone calls demanding payment of taxes and local law enforcement is not and would not be involved in such matters. If you receive such a call, hang up and call your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.

If someone has information that they would like to provide while remaining confidential, they may call the Crime Stoppers line at 586-TIPS (8477), 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.tricitiescimestoppers.org
