PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland Police say officers shot and killed a suicidal man who pointed a gun at his head, was screaming and ranting and had fired two rounds outside a Portland hospital.
Officers responded to the area shortly before 6 a.m. Friday. They couldn't immediately tell what he was holding, but could see it was a gun once the sun came up.
Police contained the area around him and crisis negotiators spoke with him. Two tactical officers shot and killed the man as they moved in to relieve the patrol officers who initially responded.
Sgt. Pete Simpson said that it's still unclear what prompted them to shoot.
No one at the hospital was harmed.
