RICHLAND, WA - The Richland Fire Department is investigating a house fire that completely destroyed a home on Dover Street. An 85-year-old man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after he made his way out of the home earlier Monday afternoon.

Before fire crews got to the scene, Gary Gilmour whose home neighbors the one destroyed Monday saw the fire from his living room. When he saw the fire he went outside grabbed his garden hose and started to spray both homes. He told us, "the flames were so hot and they came out so fast, they cracked the side of my house, and damaged the vinyl siding, so a lot of heat".

Gilmour has terminal lung cancer and continued to battle the flames and smoke until he was unable to breath.

The cause of the fire is unknown at the time, crews were back on scene Monday night boarding up the home. The homeowner has two dogs one was brought to the vet and the other was not found.
