SAINT-DENIS, FRANCE (AP/NBC News) - French authorities still aren't confirming whether the suspected planner of Friday's attacks in Paris, Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed or arrested in this morning's raid on an apartment in a Paris suburb.

The siege ended with two people dead -- including a woman who set off an explosive vest -- and seven people in custody.

They included two people who were trying to hide in the rubble after the gunfire and explosions, and the man who provided the apartment.

Also killed was a a police dog named Diesel, police said earlier.

The department also tweeted a picture of a dog, with the caption “Assault and explosives search dogs: indispensable in the missions of the operators of the #RAID.” It is not confirmed if the dog pictured is Diesel.

A prosecutor says the raid was launched after information from tapped phone conversation and other surveillance indicated that the suspect might be in a safe house in the area.

Authorities have described the Belgian man, of Moroccan descent, as the chief architect of the attacks Friday that killed 129 people and injured 350 others.

Residents of the area where the raid took place say the first explosion shook the area a little after 4 a.m. One man says he heard "continuous" sounds of grenades and automatic gunfire for an hour.
