Snow Routes Now in Effect in Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA -  The City of Yakima wants you to be informed about the snow routes that are now in effect. This is a plan that the city has implemented, after people expressed concern over the amount of time it was taking to get streets cleared.

When a snowfall reaches 3 inches in depth, a "snow alert" will be issued by the city. This lets car owners know they need to move their vehicles from the snow routes as soon as possible. The City of Yakima tells us the priority in which streets are cleared is also different from what it's been in the past.

"Often times, the downtown streets were the last ones to get cleared. That's actually been flipped now. The downtown will be the focus to get it back up and running as quickly as possible," said Randy Beehler, Communications Director for the City of Yakima.

So how will you know if there's a snow alert in effect? The City will post that information on their website, social media and use news outlets to inform people. They will also post flyers to get the word out.

The City understands it will take people time to adjust to this new plan, but over time, if they fail to move their car after a snow alert has been issued, the owner could be looking at a $50 fine as well as towing costs.
