RICHLAND, WA - Firefighters in Richland are testing about seven miles of fire hoses about 900 feet at a time.

Firefighters have to test all their hoses on their trucks every year and crews will be doing the tests over the next few days.

They're looking for punctures cracks or leaks that could cause a problem while fighting a fire.

Most minor damage to the hoses can be repaired bigger problems then the hose needs to be thrown out.

Richland Fire Department Captain Adam Hardgrove said "today we're testing our hose, we do this annually, once a year we take all the hose in our inventory, take it out back and we test it. Typically we test it at pressures above what we would be flowing at a house fire. But that way we make sure that there's not going to be any catastrophic failure."

Fire crews tell us they also have to throw out the hoses once they are 20-years-old.
