Woman From Yakima Valley First Latina Elected to Seattle City Council

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle City Council has its first member of Latino descent.

Councilwoman Lorena Gonzalez was sworn in Tuesday evening, after King County certified its election results. Gonzalez is a civil rights attorney and community advocate who served as legal counsel to Mayor Ed Murray who handled wage theft, anti-discrimination and police misconduct cases.

In a speech to friends and supporters, Gonzalez recalled growing up in the Yakima Valley in a Spanish-speaking family of migrant farmworkers. She said she sometimes spent hours before school picking cherries. She described that as a formative experience that helped inspire her to be an advocate for those who don't have a strong voice in government.
