SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state has taken another step toward starting a traditional 529 college savings plan.

The plan would be run by the state, not an outside investment group. It would be in addition to the state's pre-paid tuition plan, which is frozen right now.

The committee that runs Washington's college savings program decided at its meeting in Olympia on Thursday that it will ask the Legislature to allocate money to pay the start-up costs for the new savings plan.

No decisions about the future of Washington's Guaranteed Education Tuition plan were made at the meeting. The director of the prepaid tuition plan says they will need to see what the 2016 Legislature decides about state college tuition before figuring out how and when to reopen the GET program.
